      A Woodcarver from Moravia

In the quiet corners of Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, within the lands of Moravia, a young boy named Albín Polášek first learned to feel the grain of wood. His early years were shaped by the disciplined hands of an apprentice in Vienna, where the scent of cedar and the precision of carving became his first language. When he arrived in the United States at the age of twenty-two, he brought little more than this trade, working through the American Midwest as a carver in Iowa and Wisconsin. These early years of laboring with wood provided a foundation of tactile knowledge that no academy could replicate.

The transition from craftsman to fine artist began in earnest when he sought formal training at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Under the guidance of Charles Grafly, his hands moved from simple ornamentation toward the profound complexities of the human form. This period of study led him across the Atlantic once more, as he secured the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1910. For three years, the light and classical shadows of Rome nourished his vision, allowing him to refine a style that balanced neoclassical grace with a deep, anatomical truth.

      The Sculptor of Chicago

By 1916, a new chapter began in Chicago, where he was invited to lead the sculpture department at the Art Institute of Chicago. For nearly three decades, he shaped the artistic landscape of the city, influencing generations of students while producing works that spoke of both myth and modern struggle. His studio became a place of intense creation, yielding pieces like Aspiration and Forest Idyl. He moved through the art world with a steady hand, earning membership in the National Academy of Design and receiving honors such as the Widener Gold Medal.

His bronze and stone works often captured the weight of human existence. In pieces like Man Carving His Own Destiny, one sees the reflection of his own immigrant experience—the determination to shape a life through sheer will. He was equally at home with the monumental and the intimate, creating public memorials for figures such as Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Thomas, yet he never lost sight of the subtle movement in a single limb or the quiet emotion in a face.

      Resilience in Winter Park

Retirement to Winter Park, Florida, in 1950 was intended to be a period of rest, but fate intervened with a sudden stroke that left his left side paralyzed. Such an affliction might have silenced many, yet it only forced a redirection of his strength. With only his right hand remaining functional, he completed eighteen major works, including the powerful Victory of Moral Law. This late period of productivity demonstrated a spirit that refused to be diminished by physical frailty.

His Mediterranean-style home and studio eventually became a sanctuary for his legacy, housing hundreds of pieces that reflect his Slavic roots and American life. The gardens surrounding his residence hold many of these bronzes, where the elements interact with the metal just as he once interacted with clay. Even in his final years, his presence remained felt through the very structures he built and the figures he left behind to watch over the lakes of Florida.
