The majority of Weidner's professional life was centered in New York City, where he established himself as a specialist in the delicate medium of miniature painting. He often worked in partnership with his wife, Fredrika, as the two collaborated on commissions that demanded both technical skill and a keen understanding of social portraiture.
His reputation in the city was largely defined by his relationship with Peter Marié. Through this connection, Weidner became a preferred hand for capturing the likenesses of the era's social elite. He produced more than 100 portraits of young New York City débutantes for Marié, contributing to a significant body of work that documented the faces of the Gilded Age. These miniatures were not merely likenesses but were essential components of the private collections held by the city's most prominent families.
