Life and Artistic Journey
Born in Guntersblum, Germany, Carl Küstner began his life as the son of a farmer and a housewife. After attending school in Guntersblum and Worms, he initially pursued a commercial apprenticeship. His path shifted when he was called for military service in Munich; being classified as unfit for service, he discovered a passion for nature and painting. Following a period in Geneva where he began creating his first works, he returned to Munich in 1884. There, he became a student of the landscape painter Professor August Fink for six years, a period during which he developed his own style. In 1900, he married Tusnelda Fink, and they had a daughter. By 1927, he was appointed a professor of fine arts.
Artistic Style and Subject Matter
Küstner’s painting style was characterized by a broad, firm, and juicy application of strong, full colors, often utilizing a color triad of green, light blue, and red. His work frequently focused on his homeland, capturing the landscapes of the Rhinehessen region, the Altrhein, and the Hessian Ried. He was particularly drawn to themes of winter and the thaw. His repertoire included various seasonal and natural scenes, such as:
His works were exhibited at the Munich Glaspalast from 1893 until 1934, and his paintings were also displayed in the Deutsche Museum and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich during the 1930s.
