Early Life, Family and Training
Carl Schmid enters the historical record on October 7, 1799, in Stettin. He is born into a lineage of visual practitioners. His father, Peter Schmid, works as a painter and art educator, while his mother is Barbara Maria, née Saarburg. The family environment is one of technical instruction and artistic practice, a setting shared with his brother, the portrait painter Wilhelm Schmid.
The specifics of his earliest instruction remain somewhat obscured by time. He may have received his first basic artistic training in Aachen, though the exact circumstances of these formative years are uncertain. By about 1820, his path leads him to the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts, where his formal education takes shape within the academic traditions of the era.
Life and Activity in Various Cities
After completing his studies, Schmid moves toward Paris. This period of travel leads him to settle in Aachen, where he establishes a presence. By 1829, he opens a "Zeichen- und Mal-Institut" in the city. His approach to teaching shifts away from mere copying, focusing instead on direct study of nature to train the eye and hand. This method makes his instruction suitable even for engineers.
The rhythm of his life shifts between major European centers. He spends the years 1831 to 1833 in Rome. London becomes another frequent destination, where he resides from 1834 to 1835 and returns again in 1842. These movements define a career spent navigating the cultural hubs of the continent.
His final years lead him south. He eventually settles in Florence, where he dies on April 9, 1885.
Patrons, Workshop and Commissions
Aachen becomes the center of Schmid's professional life on June 15, 1829, when he opens his "Zeichen- und Mal-Institut." This is no mere copying studio. He shifts the pedagogical focus away from the traditional reliance on prepared sheets. Instead, he insists on direct nature studies. This method aims to sharpen both the eye and the hand, a technique that makes his instruction equally valuable to engineers as it is to fine artists.
The summer of 1837 brings a public spotlight to his skill during the Aachen painting exhibition. He presents portraits of contemporary artists within the Rathaus, capturing the faces of his peers. His reputation for precision likely leads to high-level royal interest. Around 1841, he probably works on a specific commission for Friedrich Wilhelm IV. This task involves creating copies of the portraits of Emperor Napoleon and Empress Joséphine, originally by Louis-André-Gabriel Bouchet and Robert Lefèvre, which had returned to Aachen from the Berliner Schloss.
Key Works and Notable Portraits
Schmid’s brush captures the faces of a changing era. In 1826, he completed a portrait of Johann Peter Joseph Monheim, a work that remains part of the Couven-Museum collection in Aachen. His ability to translate character into oil is evident in his 1832 portrait of the architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, now held by the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. This likeness of Schinkel places Schmid within the circle of significant Prussian intellectual life. Elsewhere, a portrait of an unknown individual, perhaps George Dixon Longstaff, resides in the Wellcome Collection in London.
Beyond individual likenesses, Schmid engaged with larger, more symbolic compositions. In 1831, he produced the oil painting Allegorie Bergbau, a work commissioned for the meeting hall of the Aachen government building. This piece moves away from the intimate scale of his portraiture toward a more formal, institutional presence. His output during this period reflects a steady command of both the private face and the public symbol.
