Born in Dresden, Germany, Gustav Otto Müller was a versatile painter whose expertise spanned military, landscape, and genre subjects. His formal artistic training took place between 1842 and 1846 at the Königliche Akademie Dresden, where he studied under Ernst Friedrich August Rietschel, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, and Julius Hübner.
