The Life and Training of Jan van Dalen
Jan van Dalen was a Flemish painter active in Antwerp during the mid-17th century. His life remains somewhat mysterious, as very little is known about his personal history. He is believed to have trained in Rome around 1630, a period during which he likely produced works such as Woman holding an Egg and Boy holding a Glass, which were signed and dated 1631. Following his time in Rome, he returned to Antwerp, where he was registered between 1632 and 1633 as a pupil of Daniel Middeleer. He continued to be active in Antwerp, with his last mention occurring in 1669–1670.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
The works of Jan van Dalen reflect the influences of the early Roman Baroque. His style demonstrates a blending of Italian and northern styles, particularly in his later works. His earlier pieces show the influence of Caravaggio and his followers, a result of his exposure to these styles while in Rome. His technique often involves dramatic lighting and nocturnal scenes.
