The Life and Art of Katherine Porter

Katherine Porter was an American visual artist born in Cedar Rapids, United States. Her creative journey took her from her upbringing in rural Iowa to studying at Colorado College and later at Boston University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. She eventually passed away at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Her work as a painter and draftsperson was characterized by a visual vocabulary that was geometric and gestural, abstract and figurative, decorative and raw, lyric and muscular. Through her canvases, she sought to convey the inherent conflict in life, addressing themes of chaos, constant changes, opposites, and clashes. Her practice often explored the tension between the personal and the historical, utilizing a style that could be described as both abstract and figurative.
