      A Life Rooted in Prague

Václav Mánes lived much of his life within the familiar walls of his brother Antonín's household in Prague. Born in 1793, his early years were shaped by a quiet education at a piarist school before he found his true calling at the Academy of Fine Arts. He entered this academy in 1808, studying under Josef Bergler and remaining there until 1824. This period of formal training provided the foundation for a career that would eventually lead him to the heart of Italy.

In 1829, a scholarship known as Klárovo allowed him to leave Prague for three years. During this time, he lived and worked in Rome. It was in the Italian air that he found himself surrounded by members of the Nazarene circle, an experience that would deeply influence his approach to painting. He returned to Bohemia with new perspectives, carrying the lessons of the old masters back to his home city.

      The Brush and the Academy

His professional life was marked by a deep connection to the institutions of his homeland. Václav did not merely study at the Prague Academy; he eventually helped lead it, serving as the interim director during two different periods, specifically from 1835 to 1836 and again in 1840. His work often moved between the structured lines of Neoclassicism and the more emotional depths of Romanticism.

The subjects he chose to paint reflected both his faith and his surroundings. He found success through religious works, including altarpieces for various churches throughout Bohemia. Beyond the sacred, he turned his attention to historical scenes and portraits of the local bourgeoisie. His ability to capture the specific features of a person's character in a portrait was one of his notable strengths. Some of his known works include:

      • Healing the Blind Man, an oil painting from 1832.
      • Portrait of Madame Stauss and Monsieur Stauss, rendered in oil on canvas.

      A Family of Artists

Artistry was a shared language within his family. Václav was part of a lineage of painters that included his brother Antonín, and he was the uncle to several other notable artists: Quido, Josef, and Amalie Mánesová. This close-knit group of relatives contributed to the artistic fabric of Prague during the nineteenth century. While he lived a life focused on his craft and his family, his presence in the academy and his membership in the Krasoumná jednota helped promote the fine arts in his community.

He passed away in Prague in 1858. His legacy remains visible in the collections of the National Gallery Prague, the City of Prague Museum, and the National Museum, where his paintings continue to be preserved for those who wish to see the history of Bohemian painting through his eyes.
