The Life and Training of William Walcutt

William Walcutt was born on April 28, 1818, in Columbus, Ohio. His early years in the United States eventually led him across the Atlantic to refine his hands. In 1852, he traveled to London to study. From there, his path took him to Paris, where he spent two years working under the guidance of Adolphe Yvon. While in Paris, he focused on painting, but he also sought out the study of sculpture at the École Impériale et Spéciale des Beaux-Arts.

After his time in Europe, he returned to the United States in 1854. He settled in New York City and opened a studio to practice his craft. He worked as both a painter and a sculptor throughout his life. His career continued until his death in New York City on April 22, 1882.

      Notable Sculptural Commissions and Works

The weight of his marble work is perhaps most felt in the Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry Monument. Created in 1860, the original statue was carved from marble. It has moved through different spaces in Cleveland, Ohio, eventually finding a place in Fort Huntington Park. While the weathered marble remains in a visitor center at Put-in-Bay, Ohio, bronze copies of the figure can be found in Providence, Rhode Island, and in the city of Cleveland itself. The likeness of Perry is even featured on the 2013 "Perry's Victory" quarter.

His hands also shaped the form of Musidora, a Neoclassical marble statue from 1868. This work carries a different kind of stillness, focusing on classical themes and mythological detail. In a different medium, he worked with zinc for The Boy with the Boot. This fountain sculpture, patented in 1875, was mass-produced by the J. L. Mott Iron Works of New York City and became known to many as The Unfortunate Boot. It was a piece meant for public spaces, appearing in various cities like Sandusky, Ohio.

Later in his career, he turned his attention to other figures, including the Samuel Smith Monument in 1880. His sculptural output shows a steady engagement with both the heavy permanence of stone and the more repetitive, industrial nature of cast metal.

      Significant Paintings and Portraits

Walcutt’s brush captured much of the social and political friction of his era. His 1857 historical painting, Pulling Down the Statue of George III, depicts a moment of intense public upheaval. This work focuses on the act of removing the gilded lead equestrian statue of the King in New York City. He also turned his attention to the American frontier in his oil on canvas, Scenes from The Pioneers by Cooper, Deerslayer at the Shooting Match, which he painted about 1850. The scene shows a winter gathering where frontiersmen engage in a marksmanship contest amidst a snowy landscape.

His portraiture work reflects the faces of the people and leaders of his time. He painted the members of the Taft family, and his likenesses of Dr. Usher Parsons and Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry remain noted examples of his observational skill. In 1870, he completed a portrait of William Bebb, who served as the Governor of Ohio. These paintings show a man interested in the specific details of his subjects' presence.

Where to See His Works Today

Tracing the physical remains of his career requires visiting several different sites across the United States. The original marble version of the Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry Monument, which was once a central fixture in Cleveland, can now be found inside the visitor center at the Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial in Put-in-Bay, Ohio. If you find yourself in Atlanta, Georgia, you can see the marble statue Musidora at the High Museum of Art. His historical painting, Pulling Down the Statue of George III, remains part of the collection at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

For those interested in his portraiture, the Taft family portraits are held at the William Howard Taft National Historic Site in Cincinnati, Ohio. Beyond these finished pieces, his personal papers are kept safe at the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution. These collections offer a way to see the hand of the artist through both his public monuments and his private records.
