early life and education

charles maurin, a french painter and engraver, was born on april 1, 1856, in le puy-en-velay (haute-loire, auvergne-rhône-alpes). he received the prix crozatier in 1875, which enabled him to study art at the école des beaux-arts under jules lefebvre from 1876 to 1879. maurin also studied at the académie julian, where he later taught.

maurin's work is characterized by its eclecticism, but his most notable contributions are in the realm of symbolism. his piece la maternité, a poignant example of this style, showcases his unique approach to capturing the essence of reality. as a member of the society of french artists since 1883, maurin exhibited at the salon of french artists from 1882 to 1890.
