      Artist Biography

      Early Life, Family and Training

August Deusser was born on February 15, 1870, in Cologne, Germany. His formative years were defined by a rigorous immersion in the classical traditions of the Rhineland. Between 1890 and 1897, he attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he refined his technical command under the guidance of Professor Peter Janssen. This period of intense study provided the foundation for a career that would eventually move toward more modern sensibilities.

His personal life became established as he entered adulthood. In 1902, he married Elisabeth Eugenie Albert. The union brought a sense of stability to his growing professional life, and the couple expanded their family with the birth of their son, Ernst, in 1903, followed by their daughter, Antonie, in 1907. These domestic ties remained central to his life as he navigated the shifting artistic landscapes of the early twentieth century.

      Artistic Style and Early Success

Deusser’s early career was defined by a commitment to genre and historical subjects. He sought to capture the weight of the past and the quiet dignity of everyday life, ranging from scenes of farmers working in the fields to dramatic moments drawn from the plays of Shakespeare. This period of his work was marked by a notable success when he won a competition to decorate the meeting room of the courthouse in Kleve, providing a visual narrative of the evening before the Battle of Kleverhamm.

As his technical proficiency grew, his artistic direction underwent a significant shift. Influenced by the changing tides of European art, he became one of the first painters associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule to embrace Impressionism. This transition led him toward an Impressionistic-influenced plein air painting style, where he sought to capture the immediate effects of light and atmosphere. His focus often turned to the movement of animals, particularly in a series of oils depicting the activities of the 8th Cuirassiers "Count Geßler" regiment. These studies of horses in motion earned him a reputation for capturing dynamic, energetic depictions of equine subjects.

      The Sonderbund and Professional Activity

In 1909, Deusser sought to reshape the regional artistic landscape by co-founding the Sonderbund alongside his friend Max Clarenbach. This union of artists was dedicated to the principles of French Impressionism, providing a platform for modern sensibilities that often clashed with traditionalist views. Through this organization, he helped facilitate major exhibitions in Düsseldorf and Cologne, bringing new perspectives to the public eye. The group's influence was significant, even as the pressures of the First World War eventually led to the dissolution of the union in 1916.

His professional standing within the academic community was solidified in 1917 when he was appointed a professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. This role allowed him to influence a new generation of painters through his instruction. He remained a fixture at the academy, balancing his teaching responsibilities with his own painting practice. He continued this dual commitment to education and creation until his retirement in 1932.

      Key Works and Notable Paintings

Deusser’s early career was marked by a fascination with military life and historical themes. He produced a series of oils that captured the daily activities of the 8th Cuirassiers "Count Geßler" regiment. These studies of the soldiers in the field helped establish his reputation for handling movement and group dynamics. His ability to depict the energy of cavalry was particularly noted in his work Kürassiere im Trabe (Cuirassiers in Motion). This specific piece, created before 1906, was later exhibited at the Kunsthaus Zürich.

The physical survival of his oeuvre was often subject to the whims of history. During the height of the bombings, the city of Düsseldorf took measures to ensure his paintings were not lost to the conflict. His works were moved from the city to a depot in Oberhundem for protection. This preservation allowed his contributions to the regional art scene to remain intact for future generations.

      Later Years, Death and Legacy

In 1906, Deusser moved to Monheim am Rhein, a transition that marked a significant chapter in his later life. His presence in the region remained a constant until his death at his home in Konstanz on October 28, 1942. During the final years of his life, the city of Düsseldorf took measures to protect his paintings from the bombings of the war, moving his works to a depot in Oberhundem for safekeeping.

The preservation of his artistic output continued long after his passing. In 1952, his estate was moved to Zurich. Since 1972, the Antonie Deusser-Stiftung has been responsible for managing his estate. This stewardship ensured that his body of work remained accessible to those interested in his specific contributions to the art of the Rhine region. On October 28, 1978, the August Deusser-Museum opened in Bad Zurzach, providing a dedicated space for his paintings to be viewed by the public.
