Hijack Ritual Painted by hand in oil, brushstroke by brushstroke

The Sculptor of Emotion and Echoes of Ritual

Born in the historic landscape of Tortona, Italy, in 1975, dafné boggeri has cultivated an artistic practice that defies the static nature of traditional fine art. Her journey is one of profound connection, rooted in the fertile creative atmosphere of Milan, where she first began to bridge the gap between the solitary act of creation and the communal experience of viewing. Boggeri’s early career was marked by her role as a curator for SPRINT – Independent Publishers and Artists’ Books Salon, an initiative that established her as a vital conduit between artists and the world of publishing. This foundational period instilled in her a lifelong commitment to collaborative exploration, ensuring that her work would never exist in a vacuum but would instead serve as a catalyst for dialogue.

Her artistic evolution is characterized by a move away from passive observation toward immersive engagement. Boggeri does not merely present objects; she constructs environments. Through installation art and performance pieces, she invites the audience to step into her psychological landscapes, transforming the viewer from a spectator into an active participant. This approach is deeply informed by the tenets of Surrealism, particularly its fascination with the dream state and the hidden recesses of the subconscious. By blending the meticulous, tactile craftsmanship of sculpture and printmaking with conceptual daring, she creates works that feel both ancient and urgently contemporary.

Themes of Resilience and Identity

The weight of Boggeri’s work often resides in its ability to mirror the human condition—specifically our capacity for vulnerability and strength. Her sculptures frequently explore the tension between fragility and endurance, using materials like stone to ground ephemeral emotions in physical reality. A poignant example of this is her piece “Hijack Ritual,” a striking stone sculpture depicting Christ overlooking the sea. In this work, the artist captures a sense of profound faith and fortitude, utilizing a realistic yet atmospheric style that speaks to universal human struggles against the elements of life.

Beyond the physical form of sculpture, Boggeri’s exploration of identity is deeply intertwined with her social and political engagements. Her involvement with TOMBOYS DON’T CRY, a queer collective, has significantly enriched her perspective on representation and the importance of diverse voices within the art world. This dedication to inclusivity extends to her work in independent publishing through Atomic Activity Books, where she champions experimental deviations and non-standard narratives. For Boggeri, art is a continuous process of reclaiming identity and celebrating the beauty found in the margins of the mainstream.

A Legacy of Collaborative Discovery

The historical significance of dafné boggeri lies in her refusal to accept the boundaries between different artistic disciplines. Her work represents a seamless fusion of:

• Sculptural Precision: Utilizing traditional techniques to evoke deep-seated emotional responses.
• Performance and Installation: Creating ephemeral moments that demand physical presence and interaction.
• Curatorial Vision: Fostering ecosystems where independent publishing and visual art can intersect.
• Social Advocacy: Using the platform of art to explore queer identity and experimental narratives.

Ultimately, Boggeri’s practice serves as a testament to the power of the interconnectedness of all things. Whether through the heavy permanence of stone or the fleeting nature of a performance, she continues to sculpt echoes of ritual that resonate long after the viewer has left the installation, leaving behind a lasting impression of what it means to be truly present in the world.
