A pioneer of Flemish impressionism, Den Duyts captured melancholic landscapes. Discover his evocative etchings and paintings today.
1850 - 1897, Belgium
Born in Ghent, Belgium, Gustave Den Duyts was the son of the draughtsman Charles Den Duyts. After receiving some drawing classes while studying in the weaving department at the Nijverheidsschool, he decided to pursue a career as an artist at the age of 24. He established a studio in the center of Ghent alongside Jean Delvin. His early career was marked by significant recognition in graphic arts; in 1875, his etchings, Hoeve in Vlaanderen and Boerenstulp te Groenendael, received prizes from the journal Journal des Beaux-Arts. Following a period of illness, Den Duyts moved to Brussels in 1887, where he continued to exhibit in Ghent until his death in 1897.
Den Duyts was a versatile artist, working as a painter, watercolourist, pastelist, etcher, and graphic artist. His repertoire included:
His landscapes often evoked a melancholic feeling, frequently depicting autumn or winter settings with a rising moon or a setting sun. These works were characterized by bare, skeletal, and stylized forms where human or animal figures appeared to dissolve into the background. Beyond his studio work, he was a designer of floats for historical parades, conducting antiquarian inquiries to ensure the accuracy of costumes and scenery for major celebrations, such as the anniversaries of the Pacification of Ghent and the nation of Belgium.
