Johann Zoffany, born Johannes Josephus Zaufallij in 1733 in Freiburg, Germany, was a painter who achieved renown primarily in England and Italy. He initially apprenticed with a sculptor, possibly Melchior Paulus in Ellwangen, before studying with Martin Speer in Regensburg. This foundational period laid the groundwork for his future career.
