He enlisted with the Royal Navy, serving with distinction and ultimately meeting Charles Napier Hemy (1841–1917), a fellow artist who significantly influenced Dawson’s style and approach. During the war years, Dawson found himself stationed at Leith, Scotland, where he served as a lieutenant RNVR in the dazzle painting section. Dazzle painting, a technique used to enhance the visibility of ships during wartime, involved applying bright, contrasting colors and patterns to their hulls – an experience that undoubtedly impacted his later use of color and composition. His service also afforded him opportunities to witness pivotal historical events, including the final surrender of the German High Seas Fleet in 1918, a moment immortalized in several of his paintings.

Following the war, Dawson established himself as a professional marine artist, dedicating himself to portraying historical subjects and portraits of deep-water sailing ships.
