Artist Biography

Olivia Irvine: Exploring Childhood Memories Through Layered Texture

Olivia Irvine is a contemporary Scottish artist whose work delves into the profound impact of memory and domestic spaces on artistic expression. Born in Kilwinning, Scotland, Irvine’s artistic journey began with formal training at Edinburgh College of Art, where she honed her skills in drawing and painting, establishing herself as a respected figure within the British art scene. Her dedication to craft extends beyond technique; it's infused with an unwavering commitment to capturing fleeting moments and conveying emotional resonance. Irvine’s artistic exploration gained momentum during her exchange program at Les Beaux Arts de Montpelier, France, fostering intercultural understanding and broadening her creative horizons. Subsequent scholarships allowed her to immerse herself in Madrid, Spain, furthering her studies and refining her approach to painting. Her formative years were marked by a desire for continuous learning and experimentation, shaping the distinctive style that characterizes her oeuvre. A pivotal moment arrived when Irvine was awarded a Spanish Government Scholarship, propelling her into a year of intensive artistic study in Madrid. This experience solidified her passion for visual storytelling and instilled a deep appreciation for diverse cultural perspectives. Her subsequent work at 369 Gallery Studios in Edinburgh provided invaluable practical experience, nurturing her talent and establishing connections within the art community. Her involvement with experimental film workshops led by Cristoph Janetzko in Glasgow underscored her versatility as an artist—a willingness to engage with different mediums beyond painting. Furthermore, Irvine’s artistic exchange to Seville, Spain, deepened her understanding of Iberian culture and enriched her creative repertoire. Her MA in European Fine Art at Winchester School of Art in Barcelona cemented her academic foundation while simultaneously exposing her to innovative artistic ideas. Continuing her artistic pursuits at WASPS Studios in Edinburgh, Irvine has maintained a prolific output since 1993, consistently pushing boundaries and exploring new avenues for artistic expression. She served as Council Member of the Society of Scottish Artists from 1998-2001, demonstrating her commitment to supporting fellow artists and fostering dialogue within the art world. Recent residencies at Carey Mortimer’s Fresco Painting Workshop in Sardinia and Abbaye Saint Jacut de la Mer in Brittany underscore her ongoing engagement with artistic exploration and cultural exchange. Irvine's artistic vision is rooted in a fascination with capturing the essence of everyday life—particularly the significance of childhood memories and the comfort found within domestic interiors. Her paintings are characterized by meticulous layering of texture, utilizing impasto techniques to imbue canvases with palpable physicality and emotional depth. She draws inspiration from Surrealist influences, mirroring the dreamlike quality of memory and prioritizing evocative imagery over literal representation. Her artistic output has garnered recognition through exhibitions at prestigious venues such as Duff House Country Gallery in Banff, Scotland; Talbot Rice Gallery in Edinburgh; The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar, Ireland; and Saint Mark’s Church and Hearse House in Northumberland. Notably, her work was featured prominently in ING Discerning Eye, London's annual showcase of emerging talent, cementing her position as a rising star within the contemporary art landscape. Her collaborative projects with Esbat Collective have further expanded her artistic reach, fostering dialogue and enriching the cultural tapestry of Edinburgh. Olivia Irvine’s enduring legacy lies not only in her captivating paintings but also in her unwavering dedication to artistic exploration—a testament to the transformative power of creativity and its ability to illuminate the complexities of human experience.
