      Joseph Melling

      1724 - 1796, France

      Artist Biography

      Early Life, Family and Training

Joseph Melling entered the world on 27 December 1724 in Saint-Avold. He was born into a lineage where art was a shared language; his family was composed of a long-established line of painters, etchers, architects, and woodcarvers. This heritage of craftsmanship likely shaped his early understanding of form and structure. After attending the Lateinschule in Saarlouis, he sought practical mastery in Paris, where he completed an apprenticeship in carpentry. This period of manual labor provided a foundation of technical discipline before he turned his full attention to the fine arts.

His talent soon led him toward the highest levels of instruction. Joseph Melling studied under the hands of Carle van Loo and François Boucher, absorbing the nuances of their distinct approaches. His dedication to the brush was rewarded in 1750, when he was awarded the Prix de Rome in painting. For this honor, he presented a version of Laban giving his daughter to Jacob. This achievement marked his emergence as a painter of significant promise, setting the stage for his future service to the courts of Europe.

Court Painter and Commissions in Karlsruhe

In 1758, Joseph Melling found his place within the courtly circles of Karlsruhe, joining his brother, the sculptor Christoph Melling, as a court painter for the Margraviate of Baden. This period of his life was marked by both professional advancement and personal union. In 1759, he married Josepha Lengelacher, the daughter of the sculptor Ignaz Lengelacher, further weaving his family into the artistic fabric of the region. His presence at the palace was not merely that of a craftsman, but that of a trusted figure within the household.

His hand was frequently called upon to decorate the grand spaces of the nobility. By 1760, he had completed a ceiling painting for the large marble hall of the Palace, a work that required both technical skill and an understanding of the court's scale. His influence extended beyond the palace walls and into the sacred spaces of the community; in 1764, he turned his attention to the Stadtkirche in Rastatt, where he decorated the altar. These commissions reflected a life spent navigating the requirements of both secular splendor and religious devotion.

Beyond his brushwork, Melling acted as a discerning eye for the nobility. He served as an advisor to Countess Karoline Luise, assisting her in the careful acquisition of an art collection. This collection would eventually form the foundation of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, proving that his influence helped shape the very history of art in the region long after his own hand had rested.

      Artistic Activity in Various Regions

As the years passed, Melling’s reputation drew him far beyond the confines of the court at Karlsruhe. He became a traveler of the landscape, carrying his brushes to various sacred and noble spaces to fulfill his commissions. In 1769, his hand was busy in Schuttern, where he looked upward to compose a ceiling fresco for the monastery church. That same year, he turned his attention to the Capuchin monastery in Baden-Baden, providing decorations that graced their halls.

His wanderings continued as he moved through the surrounding territories, seeking new patrons and new walls to adorn. By 1770, he had arrived in Hechingen, where he labored to create altarpieces for the Stiftskirche. The demands of his talent meant he could not remain stationary for long. Two years later, he found himself in Freiburg, tasked with the creation of a large mural for the Grand Ducal Palace, a work that required both strength and a steady hand to complete.

      Art School and Later Years

In his later years, Melling turned his attention toward the instruction of others, establishing a drawing school within the walls of what had once been the palace's menagerie. This period of teaching was marked by a shift in his circumstances; by 1774, driven by the weight of financial necessity, he departed from the court at Karlsruhe and moved to Strasbourg. It was there that he sought to formalize his pedagogical ambitions by founding an art school known as the Academie de déssin d’après nature.

The tides of political change eventually reached his doorstep, and by 1789, the school he had built was superseded by a new system of centrally-controlled state schools. Yet, the spirit of his instruction did not vanish. By 1791, he found the means to open a private school, an endeavor made possible through the support of his son, Joseph Ignaz Melling. This family connection allowed him to continue his work in the art of drawing even as the world around him underwent profound transformation.
