      A Life of Artistic Pursuit

Adela Mary Younghusband was a New Zealand painter, photographer, and printmaker. Born in Te Awamutu, she worked as a photographic retoucher in Hamilton before becoming a member of the Auckland Society of Arts in 1909. Following a move to Whangārei, she established herself as a successful portrait photographer through her work in a photographic studio.

Her commitment to the arts extended to leadership and community building. She founded the Whangarei Arts and Literary Society, serving as its secretary, and later helped convene the inaugural meeting of the Waikato Society of Arts in Hamilton, where she also served as secretary. Between 1937 and 1940, she undertook art education and creative experimentation in Australia, becoming a member of the Victoria Society of Arts.

      Artistic Themes and Legacy

Younghusband produced a large and varied body of work that continued well into her eighties. Her paintings encompass several distinct subject matters:

      • Scenes of everyday life at home and at work.
      • Landscapes highlighting human interaction with farming, logging, and quarrying.
      • Allegorical works exploring themes of religion and war.
      • Works engaging with Māori mythology through stories and symbolism.

Her work has been featured in various exhibitions, including solo shows at the Auckland Society of Arts and the John Leech Gallery. Notable retrospective exhibitions include Adele Younghusband: In Context and Adele Younghusband: The Cursive Line, which presented her works at venues such as the Whangarei Art Museum, the Sarjeant Gallery, Te Tuhi, and the Waikato Museum.
