The Life and Artistic Journey of Adolf Büger

Born in Munich, Germany, Adolf Büger studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts starting in 1906, training in the classes of Peter Halm and Angelo Jank. His early career was marked by exhibitions in significant galleries, including those of Heinrich Thannhauser, Adolf Weinmüller, and the Brackl art dealership in the Munich Glaspalast. His work reached international shores in 1910, when he exhibited at the Neue Galerie in New York alongside Erich Heckel and Max Pechstein. Throughout his life, he maintained friendships with fellow artists such as Wilhelm Heinrich Nagel and Willi Geiger.

The hardships of the world wars left profound marks on his life and work. His studio in Munich was destroyed during the Second World War, resulting in the loss of nearly his entire early body of work, including approximately 150 paintings. One of the few surviving pieces from his pre-war period is a depiction of two skiers, which includes a self-portrait of the artist. His 1947 work, Selbstbildnis mit Stirnverband, reflects the deep traces left by the two global conflicts.

While in Salzburg, he captured artistic renditions of the city, such as the Festung Hohensalzburg in 1955 and a section of the Salzburg Old Town in 1963. His creative life was further enriched by his marriage in 1957 to the graphic artist and painter Ika, a relationship that served to fertilize their mutual creativity.

His artistic repertoire evolved over time, encompassing various themes:

In his later years, Büger was an active participant in the Munich art scene, exhibiting regularly with the Neue Münchner Künstlergenossenschaft at the Große Kunstausstellung München and participating in exhibitions with the artist group Der Rote Reiter.
