      The Leipzig Lineage

Schlotheim, Thuringia, 1940. A life begins in the shadow of a changing Germany. Arno Rink moves through the rigorous academic structures of the East, entering the Arbeiter- und Bauernfakultät Dresden in 1958 before finding his true footing at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. Between 1962 and 1967, the studio becomes a site of intense formation under the guidance of Werner Tübke, Hans Mayer-Foreyt, and Harry Blume.

The brushwork carries the weight of tradition. Rink operates within the second generation of the Leipzig School, a movement defined by German figurative precision. His technique relies on sharp contours and bold compositions. There is no room for hesitation in his application of color or the execution of his painstaking methods. He does not merely paint; he constructs images with an exacting, disciplined hand.

      The Academy and its Successors

By 1972, the student becomes a fixture of the institution itself, appointed as an assistant at the HGB. This begins a thirty-five-year tenure of teaching that would reshape the landscape of German painting. Rink occupies the highest seats of academic authority, serving as headmaster from 1987 to 1995 and later as rector. The halls of the Leipzig school carry his influence through the generations.

The names of those who sat in his classes now define a new era. He guides the development of prominent painters who would form the New Leipzig School:

A Life in Pigment and Presence

The world expands beyond the borders of East Germany. In 1975, travels take him to the Soviet Union, West Germany, Italy, India, and Cuba. These movements inform a visual language that remains rooted in figuration but possesses an exciting, expansive energy. His recognition reaches international stages, including representation at the Venice Biennale in 1984 and receiving East Germany’s national prize in 1986.

Even as physical strength wanes, the work persists. He continues to paint in his atelier until his death in 2017. His final project, a new version of his 1978 work "Italienische Begegnung" (Italian Encounter), remains unfinished on the easel. The oeuvre, totaling approximately 200 paintings from 1965 to 2017, leaves behind a record of a man who processed personal experience and contemporary history through the direct, unyielding medium of paint.
