      Life and Artistic Journey

Born in Cologne, Germany, Arthur Erdle was a painter, artist, and musician. His formal training began with private lessons in his hometown between 1911 and 1912, followed by studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1912 to 1918, a period interrupted by military service during the First World War. During his time in Düsseldorf, he studied under Willy Spatz, Carl Ederer, and Adolf Maennchen.

Erdle was an active participant in the German art scene, becoming a founding member of the Künstlervereinigung Das Junge Rheinland in 1919. He later co-founded the Rheinische Sezession in 1928 and was a member of the Deutschen Künstlerbund. His travels during the 1920s took him through Germany, Belgium, France, and Spain. In 1929, he was awarded the Albrecht-Dürer-Preis by the city of Nürnberg. His life was marked by significant upheaval; in 1937, fifteen of his works were confiscated from public collections during the "Entartete Kunst" action, with seven of those works being destroyed. Following air raids on Düsseldorf in 1943, he lived in Robertville until 1945, eventually returning to Düsseldorf where he exhibited again in late 1945. He was honored with the Cornelius-Preis by the city of Düsseldorf in 1948.
