The Life and Artistic Evolution of Carl Theodor Protzen

Born in Stargard, Carl Theodor Protzen was a German painter and graphic artist who studied in Leipzig and Paris. During the First World War, he was held as a civilian prisoner on Corsica, a period during which he first practiced as a painter. His formal training continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Ludwig von Herterich between 1919 and 1925. Throughout his career, he was an active member of various artistic organizations in Munich, including the Munich Artists' Association and the Munich Artists' Cooperative. His travels for study took him to Denmark, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland.

Protzen's stylistic journey was marked by significant shifts. While his early work leaned toward impressionism, latent expressionism, and New Objectivity, his later years saw him experimenting with Cubism and Abstraction. His subject matter evolved from still lifes and landscapes to industrial themes and, from 1943 onwards, flower still lifes. He is notably recognized for his paintings of the construction of the Reichsautobahn, including the work Straßen des Führers, which depicts the construction of the Holledau viaduct.

      Exhibitions and Legacy

Protzen was a frequent participant in the Great German Art Exhibitions in Munich, exhibiting 19 works in total. His work has been preserved in various collections, including the German Art Archive at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg and the Bavarian State Painting Collections. Additionally, a selection of his watercolors is held in the German War Art Collection at the Centre for Military History in Washington, D.C.

Following the end of the war, Protzen remained active in the cultural sphere, co-founding the new Munich Artists' Cooperative in 1945 and the exhibition management of the Haus der Kunst in 1949. His artistic legacy was further recognized through a memorial exhibition held at the Munich City Gallery in the Lenbachmuseum in 1976.
