The Artistic Journey of Conrad Buff II
Born in the village of Speicher, Switzerland, Conrad Buff II developed an early interest in sketching art. After enrolling in the School of Arts and Crafts in St. Gallen at the age of 14, he eventually decided to leave Switzerland for America in search of an inspiring lifestyle. His journey West through America involved various roles, including painting, shepherding, washing dishes, and baking. Upon arriving in Los Angeles in 1907, he earned an income by painting houses and later attended the Art Students League of Los Angeles and night classes at Los Angeles High School. His early work included a series of small oil portraits and landscape paintings, which were popular in California during that era.
Technique and Collaborative Legacy
Buff's artistic style evolved significantly, particularly during the 1910s when he began utilizing a cross-hatching technique similar to broken brush strokes. His paintings often leaned toward abstraction, where some areas remained defined while others appeared rough and less detailed, eschewing exact representation for a unique interpretation of the landscape. Beyond landscapes, he was commissioned to paint architectural murals in locations such as the Southern California Edison Company building in Los Angeles and the First National Bank of Phoenix.
From 1936 to 1968, Buff collaborated with his wife, Mary Buff, to illustrate children's books. Together, they produced 14 books, including titles such as Dash & Dart and The Apple and the Arrow. Their work in children's literature earned recognition through several Newbery Honors and a Caldecott Medal runner-up position. He continued his work as an illustrator until 1968, eventually passing away in Laguna Hills.
