The Life and Art of Cristóbal Vela
Cristóbal Vela was a Spanish Baroque painter and gilder. Born in Jaén, Spain, he studied the first principles of painting in Córdoba, Andalusia, under Pablo de Céspedes. His education continued in Madrid under Vincenzo Carducci, and some sources suggest he studied in Seville beginning in 1610. During his time in Seville, Vela worked with art dealers Carlos Atabante and Juan de Quintanilla. For Atabante, he painted 330 canvases of various themes and sizes, while for de Quintanilla, he produced 300 religious pieces, some of which featured profane themes.
Vela's career included significant commissions for altarpieces and sculptures. In 1618, he worked on the golden altarpiece of San Anton in the church of San Juan, and in 1619, he was hired for an altarpiece in Campillo de Arenas. By 1627, he was working in Priego, where he created the altarpieces of Saint Peter and Our Lady of the Rosary in the parish church. In 1645, he won a competition to complete altarpiece paintings of the Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba. His most acclaimed work was painted at the church of San Agustín de Córdoba, including his archangels and the upper choir.
