      A Versatile Dutch Artist

Daan Wildschut was a Dutch artist whose creative reach extended across numerous disciplines. While he was primarily recognized for his masterful stained glass windows and mosaics, his artistic output was remarkably diverse, encompassing work as a painter, sculptor, writer, ceramicist, and textile artist. He also practiced as a decorative artist, illustrator, muralist, draftsperson, glass painter, and watercolorist.

His formal training took place at the Royal Academy for Art and Design in 's-Hertogenbosch and the Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp. Following the Second World War, Wildschut established an atelier in the Bonnefanten Monastery in Maastricht alongside fellow artist Charles Eyck. His talent was recognized early on when he won the Royal Subsidy for Painting for three consecutive years starting in 1937.

      Significant Works and Commissions

Wildschut’s legacy is etched into the architecture of many significant sites. He designed a large window for the Dutch Pavilion at the 1935 World Exhibition in Brussels. His glass-in-lead windows can be found in various churches, including the Munsterkerk in Mönchengladbach and the Basilica of Our Lady 'Sterre der Zee' in Maastricht. In the Heilige Moeder Annakerk in Heerlen, the first complete concrete church in the Netherlands, he created glass-in-concrete windows featuring "modern saints" and martyrs such as Anne Frank and Steve Biko.

His monumental mosaics are located in hospitals in Helmond, Nijmegen, Tegelen, and IJmuiden. Other notable works include:
