      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in 1856, Daniel Hernández Morillo entered a world shaped by dual lineages, with a mother from Peru and a father from Spain. His early years were defined by a move to Lima at the age of four, a transition that would eventually set the stage for a life spent largely between South America and Europe. It was in this Peruvian capital that his formal artistic inclinations first took root.

At the age of fourteen, Daniel Hernández Morillo entered the studios of Leonardo Barbieri, an Italian-born painter and daguerreotypist. Under Barbieri’s guidance, the young student began to master the technical foundations of his craft. This period of apprenticeship provided the discipline necessary for the ambitions that would soon follow. By 1872, his talent had already begun to attract official attention; a version of the "Death of Socrates" painted by him earned recognition from the government of President Manuel Pardo. This early success provided the essential grant that would allow him to leave Peru and pursue his studies on a much larger scale.

      Artistic Career in Europe

Leaving Peru in 1874, the young painter sought the established traditions of the Old World. His path led him first to Rome, where he spent nine years refining his technique under the guidance of Marià Fortuny. This period of intense study helped shape a style rooted in the narrative and anecdotal traditions of the nineteenth century. His work often embraced a renewed academicism, utilizing pastel tones and a lightness of facture that recalled the grace of eighteenth-century French rococo scenes.

Upon settling in Paris, he became a fixture within the city's professional circles. He was elected President of the Sociedad de Pintores Españoles and maintained a steady presence in the official salons as a member of the Société des Artistes Français. His ability to navigate these formal institutions resulted in significant recognition. At the 1900 Exposition Universelle, he was awarded a Gold Medal, and in 1901, he received the Légion d’Honneur.

His European residence was marked by frequent travel and exhibition. In 1912, his reach extended beyond France as he exhibited in Montevideo and Buenos Aires before returning to Paris. He remained in the French capital through the end of the First World War, maintaining his connection to the European art scene until 1918.

Return to Peru and Later Years

The later years of Daniel Hernández Morillo’s life were marked by a transition from the international stage back to his roots. Following a period of exhibition in Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and Rome in 1912, he returned to Paris in 1918. This period of residence in Europe concluded as he shifted his focus toward the institutional development of art in his homeland.

His influence became deeply embedded in the formal structures of Peruvian art education. He was appointed as the first Director of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. This leadership role continued as he served as the Director of the School of Fine Arts in Lima from 1918 until his death in 1932. His presence in these institutions helped shape the direction of academic study in the country.

He remained in Lima until the end of his life. Daniel Hernández Morillo died on October 23, 1932. His long tenure in the administrative and educational spheres of the capital ensured that his presence was felt within the Peruvian art community long after his years of travel and study in Europe had concluded.
