      Early Life and Artistic Training

Born in Basel, Switzerland, Edward L. Custer was the son of Emil Custer and Nannette Tollmann-Spann. His family emigrated to the United States in 1846, eventually settling in Manchester, New Hampshire. His talent for drawing was evident during his school years, leading to his first exhibitions at the Boston Athenæum, where he displayed early scenes of farm life and rural settings.

To pursue formal art studies, his parents sent him to Europe. He enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1860, studying under Andreas Müller and Ludwig Heitland. Following this, he studied at the Kunstakademie München, where he was instructed by the Swiss landscape painter Johann Gottfried Steffan. After a period of travel through Basel, he returned to Manchester in 1863.

      Career and Artistic Style

After marrying Ruth Ann Porter in 1864, Custer opened a studio in Boston. He established himself primarily through portraiture, painting notable figures such as Moody Currier, Colby Cheney, Frederick Smyth, and Alonzo G. Smith, as well as the anthropologist Samuel Foster Haven and the physician John Barnard Swett Jackson. His portfolio also included genre scenes, animal studies, still lifes, and attempts at history painting.

Custer's work is characterized by a poetic colorism and a detail realism marked by botanical accuracy. His exhibitions included the National Academy of Design in New York City and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Following the death of his first wife, he traveled through Europe again before his death in Boston.
