The Life and Artistic Journey of Erich Leps

Born in Tallinn as Erich Lõps, this Estonian painter began his formal training at the Tallinn Industrial Art School between 1916 and 1917. His early path was diverse; he worked as a junior draftsman at the Russian-Baltic Shipyard and later studied at the maritime school in Kronstadt, graduating as a radio telegrapher in 1920. Following his service in the defense forces, he returned to the State Industrial Art School and eventually studied under Nikolai Triik at the Pallas Art School. A scholarship from the Government Fine Arts Endowment allowed him to study in Paris from 1931 to 1932, after which his travels took him through Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Sweden, and Russia.

      Artistic Career and Legacy

Leps established himself as a prolific painter known for his portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes. During the 1930s, he lived in Pärnu, where he maintained a studio and organized art excursions. His work was exhibited extensively in Estonia and abroad, including in Riga and Moscow. After living as a war refugee in Ulm, Germany, he emigrated to the United States in 1949. In America, he worked as an art teacher and portrait painter before transitioning to work as an advertising artist in Hartford, Connecticut, and later in Chicago. His technical skill led to a position at the headquarters of the General Outdoor Advertising Company, where he worked until 1965. His final wish was for his art collection to be returned to his homeland, a request that was fulfilled through the support of his family and the National Archives of Estonia.
