      The Artistry of Evert Ploeg

Evert Ploeg is an Australian portrait painter born in Sydney. Working from a studio on the city's Northern Beaches, he primarily creates works in a tonal realist style, often utilizing oil. His approach is characterized by a sculptural method that builds character and emotion through tonal layering, complemented by a rhythmical application that provides a dynamic sense of movement. A notable feature of his work is the aesthetic rendition of hands. While his early career involved exploring alternative textures and surfaces, his more recent practice has embraced an Alla Prima element through engagement with plein-air painting.

Before establishing himself in portraiture, Ploeg spent thirteen years as a trained illustrator. His early professional work included commissions for advertising agencies, publishing houses, and cosmetic companies, as well as illustrating book covers for various series and children's stories. His illustrative background also led to receiving an award from publisher Random House for Outstanding Cover in 1999.

      Recognition and Collections

Ploeg has achieved significant recognition within the Australian art community, notably through his success at the Archibald Prize. He has won the Archibald People's Choice Award in 1999 and 2007, and was awarded the Packing Room Prize in 2004. His standing in the field is further marked by receiving the lifelong Signature Status from The Portrait Society of America.

His portraiture is held in numerous prestigious collections, including:

Beyond traditional studio work, Ploeg has participated in live painting for theatre projects, such as the Namatjira production at the Belvoir Street Theatre, and has contributed to various community development projects with Big hART Inc.
