The Life and Evolution of Francisco Smith

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, to a wealthy family, Francisco Smith was the son of an industrialist and a mother with a keen interest in art. After revealing his talent for drawing at the Pedro Nunes High School, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Lisbon. Seeking to move beyond traditional academic education, he settled in Paris in 1907. There, he studied at the Académie Julian and became a friend of Marcel Proust. Following his marriage to the sculptor Yvonne Mortier, he took French nationality and shortened his name to Francis.

His artistic journey is defined by three distinct phases. His early period was influenced by Fauvism, followed by a middle phase of experimentation with Cubism and Surrealism. In his final phase, he adopted a figurative style, focusing on still lifes and landscapes that often explored memories of childhood places, particularly Lisbon. During the war in 1940, he and his wife fled Paris for the south of France.

      Exhibitions and Legacy

Smith exhibited his work in several landmark events, including the 1911 Exposições de Humoristas e Modernistas and the 1925 First Autumn Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon. He also contributed to the decoration of the modernist Bristol Club nightclub. His work has been featured in various galleries, such as the Berthe Weill and Collete Weill, and he was commissioned by the Portuguese government to paint a large work on the Algarve for the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris.

His legacy is preserved in several institutions, including:

      • The National Museum of Contemporary Art of Chiado in Lisbon
      • The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Modern Art Centre (CAM) in Lisbon

Following his death, retrospective exhibitions were organized in Lisbon and Paris, and his paintings were included in traveling exhibitions across Brussels, Paris, and Madrid.
