The Life and Workshop of Frans Verbeeck
Frans Verbeeck was a Flemish painter and draughtsman from Mechelen, Belgium. A member of a significant family of artists, he operated a large workshop in Mechelen that included various branches. He became a master of the local painter's guild in 1531 and served as its dean on several occasions, specifically in 1563, 1564, and 1565. While he is the best-known member of the Verbeeck family, the stylistic and iconographic similarities between family members have led some historians to attribute many works to a collective Verbeeck group.
The works produced by this workshop were typically executed in tempera or watercolor on linen. These compositions were often small in scale. Because of the close proximity in style and composition among the family members, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between individual artists such as Frans and Jan Verbeeck.
