The Life and Travels of Frédéric Dubois

Frédéric Dubois was a French painter and miniature painter who was active in Paris until 1804. During his time in Paris, he served as the court painter of Louis Joseph, Prince of Condé. His career eventually took him to Saint Petersburg, where he stayed until 1818 and was granted membership of the Saint Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts in 1813. While in Russia, he was appreciated by the court of Alexander I, taught at the Imperial Academy of Arts, and painted numerous portraits of aristocrats, royalties, and French expatriates. His later career included exhibiting in London locations, such as the Royal Academy, between 1819 and 1820.

Beyond his portraiture, Dubois was a printmaker who produced royalist caricatures. His artistic output included:

      • Miniatures executed in watercolor and gouache on ivory.
      • Oil portraits.
      • Satirical prints consisting of ten hand-coloured etchings on paper.

      Artistic Technique and Style

The miniatures of Dubois are characterized by fresh, well-drawn figures painted with fine, small, crossed, narrow strokes running from the upper right to the lower left. In his most accomplished works, he achieved soft chiaroscuro effects reminiscent of Leonardo's nuanced style, providing a sense of psychological depth and introspection to his sitters. While he often utilized dark gouache for backgrounds, his later miniatures sometimes featured backgrounds executed in parallel hatchings in the English style. His works are often signed as F. Dubois to distinguish them from other artists of the same surname.
