Life and Artistic Beginnings
Born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Fritz Duda was born into a mining family in the Ruhr area. Due to having fused fingers on both hands from birth, he was unable to follow the family tradition of becoming a miner. His formal artistic education began at the Folkwangschule in Essen from 1922 to 1924, followed by studies at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Charlottenburg/Berlin-Weißensee between 1924 and 1933, where he was a student and master pupil of Karl Hofer and Paul Plontke.
His artistic work commenced around 1925. In his early social-critical paintings, nature and creatures serve as allegories for social conditions. During his career, Duda was a member of the Asso Berlin and the KPO-Opposition. Following his exclusion from the Kunsthochschule in 1933, he worked as a freelance artist. During the war years, he worked as a draftsman and model builder in an architectural office and was involved in political underground activities. In 1944, his studio in Berlin was bombed, resulting in the loss of his studio and all his works.
Later Career and Recognition
After 1945, Duda resumed his freelance activities and participated in the reconstruction of the KPD, the Berlin municipal administration, and the Schutzverband bildender Künstler (SbK) in the FDGB. He co-founded the Verband Bildender Künstler der DDR. Throughout his life, he undertook many study trips to locations including Bulgaria, Moscow, Leningrad, Central Asian Soviet Republics, Kraków, and Colmar.
