The Life and Career of Germain Panthot
Born in Lyon, France, Germain Panthot was a painter who achieved significant professional standing within his home city. Following a formative journey to Rome to refine his training, he returned to Lyon where he served as a master of the painters' guild from 1624 until 1666. In 1637, he was appointed as the peintre ordinaire de la ville de Lyon, a prestigious position succeeding Horace Le Blanc. In this capacity, he was tasked with painting portraits of the king, governors, and various officials of Lyon, as well as creating ephemeral decorations for solemn entries and festivities such as the Saint-Jean festival.

He was responsible for the decorations of the Hôtel de Ville for seventeen years, working alongside Thomas Blanchet starting in 1655. His artistic output included religious subjects, landscapes, and a specialization in portraiture, including a portrait of King Louis XIV in 1654. He passed away in Lyon in 1675, having resided in the Hôtel de Ville toward the end of his life.
