      Life and Artistic Journey

German Grobe was a German painter born in Hanau, Germany. His formal artistic training began with Georg Cornicelius before he attended the Städtesche Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main, studying under Eduard von Steinle. His education continued at the Kunstakademie München under Ludwig von Löfftz and later at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, where he was a student of Eduard von Gebhardt and Eugen Dücker.

Throughout his career, Grobe traveled extensively to coastal regions, including Bordighera/Riviera, Le Tréport/Normandie, Vlissingen, Sylt, Ekensund, and Egmond aan Zee. He was a member of the Hamburger Künstlerverein and the Verein der Düsseldorfer Künstler. In 1902, he established a "Malschule für Damen" in Düsseldorf. He spent much of his life in Düsseldorf, eventually residing in the Pempelfort district.

      Subject Matter and Works

Grobe's work often focused on marine genres, specifically the life of fishermen and sailors on the beach, harbor facilities, and departing or arriving fishing boats. His paintings frequently depicted the "holländische Fischerflottille," featuring flat-bottomed fishing vessels known as Bomschuiten anchored on the shore. His repertoire expanded to include fish auctions, mussel fishermen with carts, bathers, and children by the seashore.

His compositions also captured local views of Katwijk, including alleys around the Oude Kerk and the sluice at the Old Rhine, often featuring people in traditional costumes. His documented works include:
