The Life and Art of Giulio Beda
Born in Trieste, Italy, Giulio Beda was a painter who grew up in the studio of his father, Francesco Beda, a known portrait and history painter. Showing artistic talent from the age of thirteen, he attended the Venice Academy under the teacher Guglielmo Ciardi. Following his studies, he moved to Munich to attend the painting school of Heinrich Knirr, where he learned of the plein air painting movements in Dachau. In 1907, he settled in the artist village of Dachau, where he started a family and lived for the remainder of his life.
Beda was a prolific landscape painter, often found working outdoors in nature. His works frequently focused on the landscapes surrounding Dachau and the Amper river, though he also painted views of Venice. His compositions are characterized by vast, colorful, and often moving skies that dominate the upper portions of his canvases, leaving only the lower third for flatlands or distant views. His paintings, which he often sold without dating them, are represented in the Dachau Picture Gallery.
