The Formative Years and Roman Apprenticeship

Born in Rome, Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari began his artistic journey despite his father's opposition to a career in painting. His talent was recognized by Carlo Antonio Gagliani, who encouraged his pursuits. Chiari eventually entered the studio of Carlo Maratta, training alongside Giuseppe Passeri and Andrea Procaccini. By the age of 22, he had already contributed to the Marcaccioni chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, where he painted the lateral lunettes depicting the Birth of the Virgin and the Adoration of the Magi.

His early career included decorating the vault of the chapel of the Montioni in Santa Maria in Montesanto and painting scenes from Roman history, such as Coriolanus before the Walls of Rome and Tullia driving her Chariot over her Father. His work also extended to the ceiling of a chapel in Santa Maria in Cosmedin.

      Patronage and Artistic Legacy

Chiari's career was marked by significant commissions from influential figures, including Pope Alexander VIII and Vittorio Ottoboni. In 1693, he decorated the Palazzo Barberini with allegorical sketches of Aurora leading Apollo, featuring various heraldic symbols such as bees, a two-headed eagle, and a golden fleece. His large-scale works included the ceiling fresco Apotheosis of Marcantonio Colonna in the Palazzo Colonna and the Glory of St. Clement in San Clemente al Laterano.

As a respected educator, he served as the principe of the Accademia di San Luca from 1722 to 1725. His studio was a frequent destination for French artists, and his pupils included William Kent, Paolo Anesi, and Giovanni Andrea Lazzarini. His later works included religious subjects such as St. Peter of Alcántara and St. Paschal Baylon and the Ecstasy of St. Francis.
