      Artistic Evolution and Style

Greet Feuerstein was a versatile Dutch artist whose creative practice spanned many disciplines, including work as a watercolorist, painter, graphic artist, illustrator, pastellist, draftsperson, textile artist, and exlibrist. Her formal training began at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. After a brief period studying under Albert Roelofs, she entered the apprenticeship of the painter Jan Toorop, where she also met his daughter, Charley Toorop.

The trajectory of her work reveals a distinct shift in technique and color. Her pre-war portraits and still lifes were characterized by a tight, simplified style with hard, straight forms and a specific use of reddish-brown skin tones. In contrast, her post-war works embraced a lighter, more organic approach. During this later period, her still lifes incorporated brighter colors and exotic motifs, eventually evolving to include the use of black contours. While her color palette brightened, her portraits maintained a significant psychological impact, particularly through the depiction of the subjects' gazes.

      Exhibitions and Legacy

Throughout her career, Feuerstein’s work was featured in various exhibitions, including:

In 1945, she became a member of the artist association Pulchri Studio, where she specialized in portraits and still lifes. Her work was also exhibited at the spring and autumn exhibitions of Pulchri Studio. A winter exhibition at Het Kunstcentrum in Den Haag between 1962 and 1963 prompted the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag to inventory her entire body of work. Despite her diverse output, her total oeuvre remained relatively small, as she frequently destroyed many of her own works.
