A Life of Architecture and Abstraction

Hans Nitzschke was a German painter and architect born in Hanover. After studying at the Kunstgewerbe- und Handwerkerschule Hannover, he worked in the studio of Michael Rachlis in Berlin during 1922 and 1923. Upon returning to Hanover in 1924, he practiced as both a painter and an architect. His architectural contributions included designing the interior of the Salamander shoe manufacturer's premises in Berlin in 1924, and various buildings for Deutsche Gasolin AG in Hannover and Essen in 1929. He also worked on a competition design for a factory and administrative building for H. Fuld & Co. in Frankfurt am Main in 1929.

In the realm of fine arts, Nitzschke was a significant figure in the development of modern movements. He co-founded the group "K" in Hannover alongside Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart. Furthermore, in 1927, he became a co-founder of the artist association "die abstrakten hannover" together with Kurt Schwitters, Rudolf Jahns, Friedel Vordemberge-Gildewart, and Carl Buchheister. His diverse professional output also included designing steel tube chairs, building studios, and working as an interior designer for shops.

      Final Years and Legacy

Nitzschke's professional life was marked by a commitment to modernism, which included working on various office interiors and public spaces, such as the Steintorhalle restaurant in Hannover. His career was cut short when he fell during the Second World War in 1944 near Paris. In later years, his connection to his home city was honored when a street named Nitzschkeweg was established in Kirchrode.
