A Master of the Saxon Court

Heinrich Göding was a German painter, engraver, miniaturist, and writer who served at the court of the Electors of Saxony in Dresden. Born in Brunswick, Germany, he was active at the court of King Christian III of Denmark before entering the service of Elector August in 1562. For forty years, he served the Electors August, Christian I, and Christian II. His extensive body of work included wall and ceiling paintings, altarpieces, and the decorative design of furniture such as tables, benches, and lattices.

His notable commissions included the artistic decoration of the Dresden Kanzleihaus and the extensive painting of the four corner houses at Augustusburg Hunting Lodge. In the Venus Hall of Augustusburg, he depicted the story of Amadis and included a self-portrait of himself as a painter at an easel. Other significant works include the decoration of the Long Gallery at the Dresden Stallhof, which featured 46 full-figure portraits of rulers and various tournament scenes.

      Technique and Literary Contributions

Göding was a versatile artist who mastered various techniques, including panel, wall, and ceiling painting, as well as gouache and copper engraving. In the latter half of his life, he focused increasingly on engraving and authored a treatise titled Kunstbüchlein vonn etzen auff allerley Metall. Beyond visual arts, he was a writer who composed verses on historical themes, such as Heinrich der Löwe, and provided illustrations for the Sachsen-Chronik by Petrus Albinus.

His artistic legacy is marked by diverse subject matter, ranging from biblical scenes and the metamorphoses of Ovid to animal depictions and historical portraits. His technical skill extended to the creation of miniatures, such as those depicting scenes from the life of Christ, and the design of ornamental objects like decorated sleighs.
