The Life and Artistic Journey of Horace Day

Born in Amoy, China, to American missionary parents, Horace Day spent his early years in the Fujian Province. By the age of twelve, he was already producing accomplished landscapes in both oil and watercolor. Following his education at the Shanghai American School, he moved to the United States to study at the Art Students League of New York, where he was a student of Kimon Nicolaides, Boardman Robinson, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. His early promise was recognized through summer fellowships from the Tiffany Foundation and exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Day’s career was marked by a deep connection to the landscapes he explored, particularly the Carolina Lowcountry and the rugged terrain of Virginia. He was a plein air painter who utilized quick, impressionistic brush strokes to record scenes directly from nature. His work spanned various subjects, including:

      Themes and Artistic Contributions

As a regional painter, Day focused on depicting the scenery of the American South. He was particularly drawn to the Lowcountry, where he sought to capture the essence of the landscape through its vernacular architecture and lush vegetation, rather than focusing solely on grand mansions. His work in this region included depictions of Edisto Island and Charleston. In his later years, while residing in Alexandria, Virginia, he produced paintings of city life, historic gardens, and portraits of local residents.

During World War II, Day served in the Army Medical Corps as a soldier draftsman and cartographer. During this period, he created sketches and paintings from the perspective of an enlisted soldier, some of which were exhibited at the National Gallery in London and the Whitney Museum. His artistic legacy is preserved in various public collections, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Gibbes Museum of Art.
