A Legacy of Conceptual and Photographic Practice

Ian Wallace is a British-born Canadian artist who has been a central figure in the development of the Vancouver School since 1965. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, his practice is characterized by the juxtaposition of monochrome painting and photography. Through this method, he explores the differences between these two mediums, referencing social and aesthetic issues through themes such as the street, the museum, and the studio.

His artistic exploration extends to the relationships between art forms, including the connections between language, art, and photography. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and his Abstract Paintings I – XII (The Financial District) were given to the National Gallery of Canada in 2014, adding to the thirty works he has already contributed to the institution's collection.

      Education and Academic Influence

Wallace studied art history and theory at the University of British Columbia, where he was also involved in the local artistic scene as a poet and musician. His academic career included teaching art history at the University of British Columbia from 1967 to 1970, followed by a tenure at the Vancouver School of Art from 1972 to 1998. During his time there, he taught a contemporary art course titled Art Now, which was among the first to introduce recent art into the curriculum.

As an educator, Wallace played a significant role in shaping the contemporary art scene by advising artists and emphasizing the importance of art history. His progressive approach to various media, including film and painting, influenced a generation of artists emerging from the Vancouver scene. His contributions to the arts have been recognized with several honors, including:

      • The Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts
      • Named an Officer of the Order of Canada
      • Induction into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts
