      Life and Artistic Evolution

Born in Karlštejn, Czech Republic, to Russian parents, Jaroslav Serpan moved to Paris in 1927. Before finding his path in painting in 1940, he studied mathematics and biology at the Sorbonne. His artistic journey saw him participate in the Surrealism movement in Paris during the 1940s. His work evolved through the influence of several artists, moving toward Informel and Lyrical Abstraction. He developed a unique visual language characterized by spontaneously painted lineations that coalesce into structured organisms on the canvas, manifesting as fields of psychic improvisation. By the transition between the 1960s and 1970s, his style solidified into colorful, sometimes comic-like forms that depicted interstellar worlds born from his imagination. His later work showed a shift toward the "small worlds" style of Kandinsky.

Serpan disappeared during a mountain hike in the Pyrenees, in the Ariège department of France, on May 12, 1976. His body was later recovered in May 1981.
