The Life and Evolution of John R. Grabach

Born in Newark, New Jersey, John Robert Grabach displayed an early affinity for drawing by copying illustrations from books at the age of ten. His formal training began with Albert Dick in Newark, followed by studies with August Schwabe in Orange, New Jersey. While working as a machinist and designer for a silverware manufacturer, he pursued art through night classes at the Art Students League of New York, studying under Kenyon Cox, Frank V. DuMond, and George Bridgman.

His early career included a period in Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he painted impressionistic winter landscapes of the Connecticut River and the New England countryside. His work Banks of the Connecticut River was selected for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exhibition in San Francisco. Upon returning to New Jersey, he became fascinated by urban scenes, particularly the "washdays" of tenement dwellers, resulting in works such as Wash Day in Spring and East Side, New York.

      Artistic Shifts and Teaching

As the Great Depression unfolded, Grabach’s style transitioned from breezy, decorative urban scenes toward more melancholy and political themes. His palette shifted to include somber grays, dark greens, browns, black, and muted reds, as seen in The Lone House, The Fifth Year, and The Horizon (Arising). His 1938 painting Taking the Hurdles was displayed at the IBM pavilion at the World's Fair and later purchased by the IBM Corporation.

In his later years, Grabach turned toward the Munich School of the nineteenth century, focusing more on teaching. He held a position at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art and authored the 1957 text How to Draw the Human Figure. His accolades included being elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1961 and a full Academician in 1968. He died in Newark at the age of 95.
