The Artistic Evolution of Jon Imber

Jon Imber was an American painter who underwent a profound stylistic transformation throughout his career. Initially recognized for his figurative works, his early paintings featured "hulking, volumetric figures with tiny strokes," creating a visual language that blended Romanesque art with blocky, cartoonish forms. These figures were characterized by fastidious, brushy mark-making. As his career progressed, Imber moved away from pure figuration, transitioning through portraits and studio landscapes toward plein air landscapes and, eventually, landscapes that approached the edge of abstraction. His work is noted for its gestural brush strokes and an intimate sense of knowing his subject that transcends mere observation.

      Life and Legacy

Born in Baldwin, United States, Imber received his BFA from Cornell and his MFA from Boston University. He spent much of his professional life teaching at Harvard and the Rhode Island School of Design. His work is held in numerous prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Fogg Art Museum, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

In 2012, Imber was diagnosed with ALS. This neurodegenerative disease presented significant physical challenges, including the loss of use of his dominant right hand. Demonstrating immense resilience, he taught himself to paint with his left hand. As his condition progressed, he adapted his technique further, painting with a brush attached to a finger on his left hand and even experimenting with a brush attached to a metal brace on his forehead. He remained a prolific painter until his death in Somerville, Massachusetts.
