The Life and Art of Joseph Stevens

Born in Brussels, Joseph Stevens was a Belgian animalier painter and engraver. He was the son of Jean François Léopold Stevens and Catherine Victorine Dufoy. His artistic training began at the college established by Pietro Gaggia in Brussels, where he studied drawing at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. He furthered his education through courses with Louis Robbe and Eugène Verboeckhoven. After marrying Marie Graham, he moved to Paris, where he frequented the studio of Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps and associated with members of the Barbizon School. Stevens was a pioneer of Realism in Belgian art and a founding member of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.

His work primarily focused on dogs, including portraits, scenes of dogs interacting with one another or their masters, and dog markets. His style evolved from Romanticist sentimental scenes toward a more Realist rendering of dogs living on the street or working for traveling entertainers. Beyond his canine subjects, he painted horses, singeries—scenes of monkeys engaging in human activities—and some marines. His palette often utilized browns and blacks punctuated by flashes of light to create a muted atmosphere.
