The Artistic Career of Louis Tauzin

Louis Tauzin was a French landscape painter, poster artist, and chromolithographer. He studied at the École des beaux-arts de Bordeaux under Jean-Marie Oscar Gué, specializing in landscapes and seascapes. Throughout his career, he presented numerous works at the annual Paris Salons and exhibited regularly at the salon of Toulouse. His achievements include receiving silver medals at expositions in Versailles in 1884 and 1885.

Beyond painting, Tauzin had a successful career as a commercial artist. He served as chef d'atelier at Champenois, a prominent chromolithography house in Paris, where he produced posters for railway companies, various brands, and the publisher Éditions Rouff. His diverse body of work includes:

      • Illustrations for the covers of Paris-Revue, including scenes from the Exposition Universelle.
      • A lithographic series titled La tombée de nuit produced in 1889.
      • Watercolors of spa towns such as Saint-Alban-les-Eaux, Évian, and Vichy, which were used for postcards.

      • Masthead art, a regular column, and propaganda postcards for the periodical L'Antiboche during World War I.

      Life and Legacy

Tauzin lived in Meudon, an area overlooking the Seine known as Bellevue. His paintings of the views from Bellevue are among his most notable works. The largest public collection of his paintings is held by the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Meudon.

In his later years, Tauzin spent time in a villa called Les Bessons near Royan on the French Atlantic coast. Following an accident involving a well at Les Bessons, he succumbed to his injuries in 1915.
