      Major Works and Artistic Commissions

Nelson Rosenberg found significant footing during the Great Depression through the auspices of the Public Works of Art Project. This federal funding allowed him to engage in large-scale communal efforts, most notably at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C. There, he collaborated with students to produce two frescoes titled "Adolescent America" and "American Panorama" in 1934. These works reflected a period of intense civic engagement, where the act of painting became a shared endeavor between the professional artist and the local youth.

His technical range extended from these expansive wall paintings to more intimate studies on paper. In 1936, Rosenberg produced "Engines and Landscape," a watercolor work that captures a specific intersection of machinery and the natural environment. This piece remains a significant part of his recorded output, illustrating the intersection of industrial subjects and the landscape of the era.

Where to See the Works Today

The physical remnants of Rosenberg's career are found in both institutional archives and the functional spaces of public life. In Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian American Art Museum holds his watercolor on paper titled Engines and Landscape. This work, measuring 10 x 14 1/2in. (25.4 x 36.8 cm), remains part of the museum's permanent collection, having been transferred from the General Services Administration in 1974.

Other pieces of his output remain integrated into the architecture of the city. The frescoes Adolescent America and American Panorama are located within the cafeteria of Theodore Roosevelt High School. These works, which were created under the Public Works of Art Project, were restored and are currently on display for the school community.
