      Early Life, Family and Training

Paul Raud was born on 22 October 1865 in Kirikuküla, within the Viru-Jaagupi Parish of Estonia. He grew up alongside his twin brother, Kristjan Raud, who would also go on to become a painter. Their shared beginnings in Estonia provided the foundation for a life dedicated to visual expression.

Seeking to refine his technical skills, Paul Raud moved toward formal academic study. He spent much of his formative years in Germany, where he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1888 to 1896. This period of intensive training helped shape his understanding of the craft before he returned to his home country.

      Artistic Style and Influences

Raud’s artistic development was shaped by the rigorous training he received in Germany. During his years at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, he became closely associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. His early work shows the clear influence of Eduard von Gebhardt, reflecting the technical foundations laid during his studies. This period provided the structural discipline that would support his later explorations into more fluid movements.

As he moved through different stages of his life, his brushwork began to shift. After returning to Estonia and spending time on the islands of Muhu and Pakri, his paintings took on a quality reminiscent of Max Liebermann. This period saw him moving away from strict academicism toward the stylistic trappings of Impressionism. He sought to capture light and atmosphere in a way that felt more immediate and less formal than his earlier training.

His later years brought further evolution through direct contact with other masters. Time spent working alongside Ilya Repin left a lasting mark on his approach, helping to refine his mature style. This evolution allowed him to move between the structured realism of his youth and a more expressive, light-filled technique in his later career.

      Teaching and Later Career

As the years progressed and the world changed through the years of World War I, Paul Raud turned his attention toward passing his knowledge to the next generation. He began to teach during and after the war, finding a new purpose in the classroom. From 1915, he held a position as a drawing instructor at the Tallinn Institute of Commerce, helping students find their own way with a pencil and brush.

His commitment to education continued as he moved into more specialized instruction. In 1923, he began working at the State School of Industrial Art in Tallinn. These years were spent shaping the technical skills of young artists in his home country. He remained active in this capacity until his death in Tallinn on 22 November 1930.
