The Artistic Journey of Peter Loew
Born in Schliersee, Germany, Peter Loew was a painter and university teacher who demonstrated an early talent for drawing and watercolors. Beginning his study of oil painting through self-instruction at the age of fifteen, his initial works focused on religious themes, such as the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Deposition, the Crowning with Thorns, and the Pietà. These early pieces were created in an "old master style." Following his training in Schliersee, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1951 to 1957 under the masterclass of Hermann Kaspar. His travels by train and bicycle took him to Sicily, Taormina, and Sweden.
Evolution of Style and Recognition
Loew’s artistic focus eventually centered on his "element and fugue paintings," which were developed in his Munich-Schwabing studio. These works were deeply inspired by a collection of recordings of music, including the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Alongside these compositions, he produced various watercolors. His career included a teaching position for free painting at the University of Munich from 1960 to 1975. In 1988, he was awarded the Seerosenpreis for Fine Arts from the City of Munich. His works are held in several public collections, including the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich and the State Gallery Stuttgart.
